It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? Fantasy to Reality

Since my last update, I’ve finished

Splintered by A.G. Howard

Splintered

This book is an amazing retelling of Alice in Wonderland. I loved how the author captured the disorienting creepiness of the original story while still infusing it with original elements.

Keeping the Castle by Patrice Kindl

keeping-the-castle

I picked this book off the award-winners shelf at the library while I was on one of my weekly trips to find books for my own children.  It’s kind of a modern day Jane Austen story, but with more sass even than Austen.

A Million Suns by Beth Revis

a million suns

This is the sequel to Across the Universe, which I believe Beth Revis calls “science fiction for people who don’t like science fiction.” Which is pretty much what I’m looking for.  I love how Revis focuses on the human and scientific issues that might arise from a ship that travels 250 years to reach a new planet.  There are many incredible plot twists and delightfully chilling moments in this series. I’m getting ready now to read the third book: Shades of Earth.

45 Pounds, More or Less by Kelly Barson

forty five pounds

This was a book that I picked out from my library’s digital collection on a whim.  I liked it for its subject matter. Anytime I see a book with a heroine who isn’t perfect and beautiful (at least at the beginning), I’m always intrigued. We need more YA books that deal honestly and sensitively with body image issues, and I appreciated Barson’s effort to write a story with a heroine who not only learns to deal with her overeating but also grows in her knowledge of the insecurities in her loved ones, especially her mother.

That’s what I’ve been reading! What are you reading?

(“It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?” is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It’s a great way to keep track of what you’re reading and see what others are reading each week.)
